WFD

With the Water Framework Directive (WFD) EU has initiated the development of an advanced monitoring programme for the ecological quality of surface waters. (Original text from EuroLex).

In all types of surface waters the ecological quality will be assessed on basis of biological, hydromorphological, physical and chemical elements.

WFD operates with five ecological quality classes: high, good, moderate, poor and bad ecological quality. The designation of “high” ecological quality characterizes the reference conditions where human influence is of little or no impact. The limit between “good” and “moderate” quality differentiates between satisfactory and unsatisfactory ecological quality.

The implementation of the WFD poses a new set of tasks in front of the member states. What is new here is that all these biological, hydromorphological and physical-chemical elements must be included. In many European countries monitoring was formerly focused on chemical sampling or on only one of the biological quality elements.

As subcontractor to DHI Water and Environment, WaterFrame participated in ECOSURV, the first comprehensive national surface water survey in a European country, Hungary, during 2004-2005. READ MORE

WaterFrame can help with the whole suite of tasks, from preparation and implementation of the monitoring programmes, to field investigations, laboratory work, data treatment and reporting.
